Marvin VanTyle, 89, of Streator passed away Monday, January 14, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital, Streator.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator.
Visitation will be 9-11 A.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Streator. Pallbearers will be, Frank Ligori, Scott Orban, Travis Orban, Colby Orban, Doug Roll and Gene Taylor. Full military rites will be accorded by members of the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Born July 23, 1923 in Switzerland County, Indiana he was the son of Augustus "Gus" and Pruda Ann (Rayles) VanTyle. He married Madelyn Vivian Dunning on April 26, 1941in Rising Sun, Indiana. She preceded him in death on March 14, 2002.
He is survived by daughters, Sandra (Mick) Ligori of Streator, Sharon Spivey of Aurora, Indiana and Karla (Doug) Roll of Mulliken, Michigan; grandchildren, Frank Ligori, Michelle Orban, Dena Meeker, Billy Braden, Erin Roll and Kristen Finkbeiner; great grandchildren, Taylor, Frankie and Hallie Ligori, Travis and Colby Orban, Teanne and Olivia Meeker and Trent Braden; numerous other relatives also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
He served in the United States Army during WW II in the South Pacific, Philipine Islands Campaign and Luzon Campaign. While in the service he earned the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two Bronze Campaign stars, good conduct ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Arrowhead and the Purple Heart.
He lived in Switzerland County Indiana until he moved to Streator in 1941. He worked at Owens Glass Company in Illinois, New York and Michigan. He retired in 1987 with over 40 years of service.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492 and the Streator Moose Lodge.
Marvin was an avid fisherman and a bowler. He also owned many horses over the years and participated in horse pulls at local fairs.
