OBITUARIES

Miss Gertrude Estabrooks, 77, a retired artist, died yesterday at her home, 1212 Shattuck Ave., after a brief illness. A resident of Berkeley since 1925, Miss Estabrooks devoted the remaining years of her life to caring for stray and homeless animals. During a 15-year period she is reported to have rescued 4671 animals. She either found them homes or took them to shelters in Oakland and Berkeley.

Specializing in the portrayal of flowers both in oil and watercolor, Miss Estabrooks exhibited her work in Chicago where she maintained a studio and gave art instruction for many years. Her flower pictures were also exhibited in Eastern cities and on the continent where she had traveled extensively. Her work was widely acclaimed by art critics wherever her exhibits were held. Most of her paintings were disposed of before her death.
