Jim Simpson was my father. He was born in Spokane, where his father worked for Union Pacific Railroad. He was Audrey Simpson's big brother.
For many years Jim was a perpetual student. He started college at UCLA in pre-med. He told me that he was president of his fraternity. He transferred to University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated. In 1940 he was a university assistant and had completed three years of graduate studies in biology, I think. He then went to the University of Kansas and took 13 years to finish his PhD in psychology.
In 1941 he married my mother, Eleanor Howe. They had me, and when I was six, they divorced. In 1954 he married Mary Anderson, another psychologist. You might be able to imagine the intellectual discussions we had over dinner when I was in high school in Corvallis, where my father taught at Oregon State College (now University). Mary was the psychologist at the Hillcrest (state school for delinquent girls) and then at the State Hospital. My dad and Mary divorced in 1968.
In the mid-70s my dad retired and moved to Clayton, Contra Costa County, California. We had fascinating, intellectual telephone conversations. He would have loved the Internet. He died alone at home.
