Mimi was born in Washington, probably at Klickitat County. She was the youngest of five children of Joseph Black and Eveline Tharp. She never talked about her childhood, so you can imagine our surprise when we learned that she had a stepfather. According to her father's pension records, her mother took her and the other children to Oregon when Mimi was about six years old. Her mother divorced her father and married Daniel Busby shortly before her eighth birthday. In 1900 she was living with her mother and stepfather on a farm in Marion County, Oregon.

In 1908 Mimi married James Albert Simpson in Spokane, Washington. They had two children: James Elliott and Audrey Pearl. By 1920 they all moved to Alameda, California. Mimi and James divorced in the 1940s. She moved to Modesto, but spent several weeks each year at her daughter's house in Oakland. She was an active member of the Unity Church. Two months before her death she moved to Sebastopol, where Audrey lived. She died from complications of a stroke. She had three grandchildren.

Her obituary was published in the Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, Calif., May 12, 1965.
