Emma Drake was the youngest of five children born to William and Jane (nee Carr) Drake. When she was a baby, the family moved from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin where her parents ran a boarding house.

Emma's oldest brother, George C. Drake, was the first Wisconsin soldier killed in the Civil War.

Emma married Richard Hugo Hatzfeld on Aug. 5, 1873. They had a son named Clarence Hatzfeld. The marriage ended in divorce.

In 1890, Emma married William H. Farnham. William was born Fabian Valesquez in Socarro, Mexico in 1848. He immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1850 and later changed his name. They had no children.
