William Drake married Jane Carr on October 18, 1841. They had five children: George, J. West, Esther Drake Bonham Campbell, Mary Drake McGregor Keats, and Emma Drake Hatzfeld Farnham. Their second son, West, died just short of his 7th birthday and is buried in Pennsylvania.

In 1856 William and his family moved to Milwaukee and set up a boarding house called The Drake House.

William's oldest son, George C. Drake, died at the age of 18. He was the first Wisconsin soldier killed in the Civil War. George Drake supposedly predicted his own death. His last dying word was said to be, "Mother".
