Obituary:
"Eleanor Byrne Edwards Merrill, born in Natchez, MS, on December 7, 1934, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, in Lafayette, at the age of 78.

A memorial gathering will be held at Martin and Castille Funeral Home SOUTHSIDE, 600 East Farrell Road, on Saturday, January 12, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. As per her wishes, there will be no formal service or interment.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her first husband, Nolan J. Edwards of Crowley, LA, and her second husband, Russell F. Merrill of Longboat Key, FL. Also predeceasing her were her mother and father, Edwin and Ilene Byrne, her brother, Donald Byrne and his wife Barbara, her sister, Ilene B. Parker, her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Besh Edwards, a nephew, Michael Byrne, a niece, Eleanor Parker and a granddaughter, Emily Alice Edwards.

She is survived by her four children, E. Byrne Edwards and his wife, Mary Alice; Christopher A. Edwards and his wife, Laura Ann; Bridget E. Boustany and her husband, Charles, Jr., and Nolan G. Edwards. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Erik N. Boustany and his wife, Caree; Ashley B. Dugal and her husband, Jacques, and Sean, Sarah, Evan, Laura, and Nolan John Edwards. Also surviving her are her brother Richard Byrne and his wife, Sondra, and her brothers-in-law, Peyton Parker of Baton Rouge, Marion Edwards of Broussard, and Edwin Edwards of Gonzales and many loving nieces and nephews, especially Peggy Byrne of Lafayette.

Eleanor lived life with a passion for all things beautiful, especially for her artwork and that of others. An accomplished artist in several media, she won many awards for her work, including a piece being chosen as the poster for the International Rice Festival in Crowley. She loved to travel and often did so with Nolan and their children. After Nolan passed away, she moved to Longboat Key, FL, to attend Ringling School of Art where she met her second husband, Russell, also an artist. They shared many years painting together around the US and abroad.

The family wishes to thank Sherry Combs, Joy Lormand, and Linda Stelly, who cared so gently for her and to Judy Dupree for her assistance. Additionally, the family would like to thank the staff at AMG and Cornerstone Village South for their cheerful and prompt attention to her needs as well as Hospice of Acadiana who tended to her in her last hours.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity or to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503 or the Lafayette Art Association, run by her dear friend, Sarah Parker, at 1008 East St. Mary Boulevard, Lafayette, LA 70503."
