Florence, Feb. 1. - Joseph D. Rutledge of Greenville died here last night after a brief spell of illness and while awaiting an operation which it was hoped would relieve him of his troubles. His death was unexpected and comes to many friends here and in the State as a distinct shock.
Mr. Rutledge was 64 years of age. He was born and reared in Clarendon county, the old family home. His first business experience was in Greenville, where he entered into mercantile business in the firm of Berry, Killian & Rutledge. He afterwards went to Texas for a short while to try the rich promises of that then new country, but soon returned to his old home in Clarendon where he lived until recently when to moved to Greenville.
Mr. Rutledge was married when a young man to Miss Minnie Burgess of Macon, Ga., and of this union were born a number of children, now almost all grown and in positions of responsibility and trust. The eldest son is R.K. Rutledge of this city, I.B. Rutledge lives in Evergreen, Ala., J.D. Rutledge, Jr. is with the Southern Express company here and the youngest son, W.B. Rutledge, is a student in Greenville. His daughter, Annie E. Rutledge, is now Mrs. A.B. Carson of Ivor, Va.
Mr. Rutledge was a modest, unassuming, earnest Christian man. He was an effective and faithful church worker and with his wife did much for the multiplication of blessings in the community where they lived. His wife survives him and is here with her sons and brother-in-law, Dr. B. Rutledge.
