Son of Robert K. and Susan Rutledge (nee Richburg). Born May 18, 1857, at Summerton, South Carolina. Of Irish and French descent. Graduated at Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina, in 1885; then attended the dental department of the University of Maryland. Married Ella, daughter of J.K. Chase, of Nashville, Tennessee. In early life farmed and taught school in Greenville County, but since 1885 has practiced dentistry at Florence. Elected recording secretary of the State Dental Association in 1890, and in 1896 elected president. In 1900 he was elected a member of the State Board of Dental Examiners for five years. In 1899 appointed a trustee of Furman University and Greenville Female College for three years. Alderman of Florence since 1896.
