Two Men Die In Fire Sunday
Bell Hollow Scene of Blaze Early Sunday
Two men were burned to death in a fire in the Bell Hollow community, just east of the Highland-Pike County line, in Pike County early Sunday. One of the victims was well-known in the Sinking Spring community.
The victims were Elisha Carter, 53, Hillsboro Rt. 4, and Burton Stultz, 59, who usual residence was on Route 124 on Latham Star Route.
Dr. Paul Jones, Pike County coroner of Stockdale, ruled "accidental death by burning" in both cases.
Investigating officers were quoted as saying that the two men and Oliver Carter, 47, of Greenfield, a brother of Elisha, "had been drinking." Exact cause of the blaze was not determined. Officers were called about 6 A.M. Sunday. The fire apparently had occurred sometime before that.
Oliver Carter escaped from the one-story, three room frame shack into which the three had just moved on Saturday. He had no serious injuries. He was at the scene when officers arrived. He had a few minor burns.
The shack had a small coal oil stove but no electricity. A few meager furnishings were destroyed.
Bodies of the two victims were burned beyond recognition, the Pike County coroner said. Only parts of the torsos remained.
Scene of the mishap was about three miles northeast of Sinking Spring.
Funeral services for both victims will be held Tuesday at the Wylie Funeral Home in Sinking Spring.
Carter was born in Pike County in July, 1907, the son of Oliver and Laura Ellen Shoemaker Carter.
He is survived by his mother who resides in Bainbridge; four brothers, Oliver, Cecil and Henry, all of Greenfield, Wilbur of Peebles Rt. 2 and one sister, Mrs. Ruth Jett of Indiana.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the Wylie Funeral Home with the Rev. Jacob Couser officiating and burial following in West Wood Cemetery near Sinking Spring.
Stultz was born in Adams County in September, 1900, the son of Richard and Eliza Shoemaker Stultz. He is survived by two sons, Burton Jr. of Latham and Paul of Springfield, Ohio; one brother, Roy, Columbus and one sister, Mrs. Nellie Barker of Latham.
Services for him will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday at the Wylie Funeral Home with Rev. Couser officiating and burial following in West Wood Cemetery.
