James Terwilliger enlisted as a Private in Company E of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on October 5, 1861, for 3 years of service. He mustered into Federal service on October 8, 1861, and was killed in action at the Wilderness, Virginia, on May 5, 1864.
