Thomas Terwilliger enlisted as a Private in Company E of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on September 16, 1861, for 3 years of service. He mustered into Federal service on October 8, 1861, and later transferred to the Invalid Corps on November 15, 1863. He transferred from Company I of the Eleventh Regiment of the Invalid Corps, back to the Fourth Michigan Infantry on March 14, 1864, and was on detached service with Company K of the First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, Petersburg, Virginia. Thomas was discharged at the expiration of his term of service on September 12, 1864, at Weldon Rail Road, Virginia.
