Theodore Brown was born in 1827 in Hamburg, Germany. He came to America between 1848 and 1850, one of many who at that time were called "The Forty-eighters". Because of the political situation in Germany, many families and individuals boarded ships headed for the young free America. Theodore probably sailed out of Bremmer or Hamburg, Germany either as a passenger or as a sailor. According to
family history, he "jumped ship" in Florida and made his way to California where he sought his fortune either in the gold rush or with those who supplied the miners. He came back to Missouri and bought land in what is today Fairfield township, Section 23, Carroll County, Missouri. He said that it reminded him of Germany where he had grown up. He began purchasing land--until he had 200 acres. He is listed in the Carroll County plat book of 1876 as a stock raiser.
He married Mary Elizabeth Falke of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, 25 Oct 1853 in Carroll County, Missouri.
Theodore and Mary Elizabeth raised 9 living children on their farm. The family donated land in the SE corner of their land for the building of the Mt. Carmel Church. He died in 1893 in Carroll County, Missouri. The tin-type picture on this page was taken about1885. He is buried with his wife and infant granddaughter in Antioch Cemetery, north of Norborne, Carroll, Missouri.
