GALVA - Agnes (Luymes) Brawner, 91, Galva, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at the First United Methodist Church of Galva. Rev. Ann Champion will officiate. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Galva or to the Galva Public Library.
She was born Dec. 14, 1921, in Middleburg, Iowa, the daughter of Neal and Johanna DeWit. She married Glenn I. Luymes on May 1, 1945. He died on Dec. 20, 1956. She later married Howard Brawner on Feb. 18, 1972. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1978.
Surviving are her children, Keith A. (Margo) Luymes of Galva, Nancy J. McClay of Knoxville, Lynn E. (Chet) Travis of Tremont, and Carol A. (Peter) King of Basalt, Colo.; her stepsons, Donald (Helen) Brawner of Peoria and Mac (Brenda) Brawner of Virginia; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a number of stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Julius DeWit and Eugene (Norma) DeWit, both of Canby, Minn.; and two sisters, Helen (Loyd) Vermeer and Edith Lubach, both of Sioux Center, Iowa. Also preceding her in death were her parents; brother and sister-in-law, James (Maria) DeWit of Holstein, Iowa; sister-in-law, Johanna DeWit of Canby, Minn.; her sister and brother-in-law, Adrianna (Eugene) Kuyper of Arkadelphia, Ark.; brother-in-law, Howard Lubach of Sioux Center, Iowa; and brother-in-law and his wife, Les (Evie) Luymes of Newport Beach, Calif.
Agnes was a 1939 graduate of Sioux Center High School. She taught in one-room schools for several years prior to marriage. In 1950 she and Glenn moved to Galva where Glenn began his veterinary medicine practice and Agnes became a full time homemaker, raising their children. She was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Galva where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and one of its circles and had served in many offices in her church. She was an active member of PEO Chapter BR. Agnes enjoyed playing bridge and golf in her earlier years. She enjoyed watching sports, particularly the University of Illinois and Iowa State and her grandchildren's sports.
