Comments by Bryan S. Godfrey, who is collaterally related to Ann and her husband, Smith Bunting, through several Eastern Shore families, and whose stepfather, Nelson Cornell Watkins, Jr. (1938-2012), was a great-great-great-grandson of Smith and Ann Topping Bunting:

As of 2009, I have over 1000 descendants of Ann imported or keyed into my Family Tree Maker database. It seems very fascinating to me that she is the common great-great-great-grandmother of my stepdad's sister, Judy, and her husband, Alfred Phillips Moore, DDS, and is buried beside her daughter Rosannah in the Smith family plot (founded by the family of Rosannah's husband, Robert Henry Smith) just through the woods behind the home of Uncle Al and Aunt Judy, in sight of their backyard. Their two children grew up here, yet they did not realize they had a common ancestor and mutual relatives who are buried there until I told them in 2007! It seems there is a good chance any randomly selected resident of Poquoson, whose family has lived there for as long as they can remember, will descend from either Ann and/or her husband (who had children from two prior marriages) and/or one of her brothers. Because Ann was descended from the Kellam, Bagwell, Custis, Smith, Michael, and Watson families and she and her husband were both almost certainly descended multiple ways from the Scarborough, West, Bagwell, and Stratton families, I can claim them as distant collateral cousins many ways. They make me kin to a large segment of Poquoson's population! My stepdad and his sister remember their great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Bunting Watkins (1871-1953), who probably was present as a ten-year-old girl when her Grandmother Ann Topping Bunting was buried in the Smith Cemetery in 1881. More than likely, William Smith Bunting, her husband, was buried in a family plot near present-day Bunting Lane closer to where the Buntings seem to have settled, that area of Poquoson having been known as Jeffs at one time.

From the research of Louis N. Barnes:

In the 1850 census of York County, Poquoson District, Ann Bunting was listed as the head of household containing the following persons:
(1) Ann Bunting, age 47, born in York County
(2) Rosannah Bunting, age 21
(3) Cornelia Bunting, age 19
(4) Soloman Bunting, age 17
(5) Jonathan Wesley Bunting, age 16
(6) Elverton Bunting, age 14
(7) Joseph Bunting, age 12
(8) Theodore Bunting, age 8

In the 1860 census of York County, Poquoson District, Ann Bunting was listed as the head of household containing the following persons:
(1) Ann Bunting, age 53, Farmer
(2) John W. Bunting, age 24, Sailor
(3) William E. Bunting, age 21, Sailor
(4) Joseph Bunting, age 19, Sailor Inland
(5) Theodore Bunting, age 16, Farm Hand

Ann Nancy Bunting, age 65, was listed in the 1870 census living in the household of her son, Solomon Bunting.

************************************************************

Ann was assigned guardianship to Solomon, John Wesley, William Y., James, and Theodore Bunting on Jan. 21, 1847. Daniel Carmines gave security.

Jeremiah, Rosanna and Cornelia Bunting chose Daniel Carmines as their guardian.
