A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Franklin County April 24, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. D, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves (aka 35th Pennsylvania Infantry). Listed as "missing" at the second battle of Bull Run, he was apparently captured but paroled and returned to duty soon thereafter. He re-enlisted as Veteran Volunteer at Bristoe Station, Virginia, February 8, 1864, and on May 31, 1864, transferred to Co. E, 191st Pennsylvania Infantry to complete his term of service. He honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1865.
