Hurshel Bland, 73, Bass Ridge Road, Elkhorn, son of the late Allen Bland and Anna Lou Purdy Bland, was born in Taylor County, Oct. 1, 1915. He died at 8:15 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 26, 1989, at the Humana Hospital University in Louisville as the result of a farm accident. He was a member of the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. He united in marriage to Edwin Louise Gribbins in March 1935. She preceded him in death in November 1943. He reunited in marriage to Louise White on May 10, 1945. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters, Carlos Bland and Joan Gabehart, both of Campbellsville, Wanda Cash, Lebanon, Jerry Bland and Tommy Bland, Elkhorn; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. The funeral was at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, at the Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville by the Rev. Ed Hamlin and the Rev. Terry Vale. Burial was at Campbellsville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Tommy White, David White, Darnell White, Buck Bland, Brent Bland, and Weldon Bland. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Terrell, Mark Terrell, Denny Lawson, Glenn Lawson, George Craig, Todd Sapp, Elmer Beaty, Cleveland Minor, Bernard Fain, W. A. Belton, D. H. Noel, Brian Peake, Jimmy Cheatham, and Jeff Cheatham Jr.
Tractor Accident Kills Man
A Taylor County man died Sunday when a tractor he was operating ran over him. Hurshel Bland, 73, of Elkhorn, had been working on his farm when the tractor started moving after he got off of it. He apparently fell under the wheels when he tried to stop it, according to Robert Carter, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner. Bland's family took him to Taylor County Hospital. He was then transported to Humana Hospital-University of Louisville where he underwent surgery for chest injuries, Carter added. He died at 8:15 p.m. Bland was a retired farmer and a member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, the former Louise White; two daughters, Joan Gabehart of Campbellsville and Wanda Cash of Lebanon; three sons, Carlos Bland of Campbellsville, Jerry and Tommy Bland, both of Elkhorn; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
