Born in Pennsylvania, Joseph Alexander is first documented in Trumbull County, Ohio in 1807 where he was married to Elizabeth "Betsey" Mathews, who, it seems was possibly also called Mary or Prudence Mathews. Still in Trumbull County, in 1813, he enlisted in the War of 1812 as a Pvt. in Capt. James Applegate's Co. 27 US Inf. By 1820, the family was living in Franklin Township, Wayne County, Ohio. Having bore no fewer than eight children in her life, Betsey died in 1826. Joseph remarried in 1830 to Eleanor Miller and moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana, in about 1839. Joseph and Eleanor had five children. Joseph Alexander died sometime after April and sometime before the end of November 1853. He was living with his son, William Alexander, at the time of his death. The final document showing evidence of his being alive was an promissory note for a bible he purchased on April 14, 1853. His estate was probated in November of that year.
