Joseph A. "Joe" Gabe, 93, Henderson, died at 8:50 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2006, at Redbanks nursing home.

He was a lifelong member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, where he practiced his devout Catholic faith and had been active in the Holy Name Booster Club and church and school fundraisers.

In 1976, he retired from Kusan Plastics, where he was superintendent. He was active and influential in the Henderson County Democratic Party, serving as a precinct committee chairman. He was a Kentucky Colonel.

Joe was an avid baseball player, coach and fan. In his youth, he played in various all-star games, and in one particular game, he played opposite Dizzy Dean. His love of baseball continued with the formation of various Little League teams, including the 1959 Henderson National Little League All-Star Team, which was one of the final eight teams in the nation. Joe built five baseball fields and two softball fields, one of which was named Joe Gabe Field in his honor. At the 1994 Henderson Hall of Fame sports banquet during which the 1959 team was inducted into the Hall of Fame, Joe remarked to a standing ovation, "There is no better time spent than with youth." In later years, Joe was inducted to the Hall of Fame for his personal achievements.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cordie Lee Melton Gabe, who died March 12, 1991; one daughter, Jo Ann Gabe Mills, who died July 10, 1965; and his parents, George William and Malissa Belle Stiff Gabe.
