ROCKWELL CITY - John William Collins 79, passed away Friday, December 14, 2012 at his home, following his battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 Tuesday, Dec. 18, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Rockwell City, with Father Brian Danner officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery, with Military Rites conducted by the Rockwell City Veterans Organization. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City, with a Parish Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil for the deceased at 6:30 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Iowa Hospice.
Bill is survived by his children, John Collins Jr. of Rockwell City, Joe Collins of Fort Smith, Ark., Paul Collins of Rockwell City, Shelly (Michael) Jones of Missouri Valley, and Heather (Kris) Miller of Rockwell City; six grandchildren; sister Mary (Gary) Warner of Rockwell City; brothers, Larry (MaryLou) Collins of Rockwell City, Jerry (Margy Halverson) Collins of Fort Dodge, and Mike (Carol) Collins of Rockwell City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo G. and Rose I. Masterson Collins; and brother, Jim Collins.
John William Collins was born February 16, 1933 at Rockwell City. He graduated from Rockwell City High School, with the Class of 1951. Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1957, he married Jean Harmeyer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City. The couple first lived in Nevada, before returning to Iowa. Bill farmed for many years in the area, and also worked for Hunt Truck Lines for 25 years. He later earned his pilot license and started his own aerial photography business. Bill was a longtime friend of Bill W. and Dr. Bob.He enjoyed trains and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Bill was a member of the Am Vets and St. Francis Catholic Church.
