Kin of Pioneer Family Dies
Mrs. Grace Truman Peabody Aged 73
Mrs. Grace Truman Peabody, daughter of a pioneer Oregon family, died Monday at the age of 73 years.
Mrs. Peabody was born in Eddyville, Ia., in 1869, the daughter of John S. Gray, who brought his family west to the Tualatin valley in 1876. Two years later, the Grays moved to the village of Spokane, where Mr. Gray was the first school teacher and justice of peace and drew up the first charter.
She was married to Charles Leon Peabody on March 10, 1904, at Stockton, Cal. Captain Peabody previously engaged in water transportation and mining in Alaska, moved to New York city in 1907 and remained there until he retired in 1931.
The Peabodys returned to the west in 1931 and have resided on the Clackamas river east of Carver. Captain Peabody is the lone survivor.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 P.M. at J. P. Finley & Son, with Dr. William Wallace Youngson officiating. Entombment will be at Riverview cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Leon V. Jenkins, R. R. Adams, W. J. Piepenbrink, Leslie M. Scott, Louis G. Clarke, Frank C. Howell, William E. Boyd, R. K. Keller, Martin T. Pratt, Lee B. Loomis, Clarence D. Phillips, Carl C. Donaugh, William Campbell, all of Portland; Earl Snell, Salem; H. Everett Mead, Oregon City, and Captain W. W. Langly, Seattle, Wash.
Active pallbearers will be Carl P. Peterson, Elmer G. Wendling, Fred Miller, James I Miller, Portland; Fred Reakseker, Oregon City, and Ralph Cooper, Milwaukie.
