PARENTS: Daniel Webster Flory, Jane Elizabeth Hopkins

Alice Jane was born in Greenwich, Ohio on May 23, 1885 and was the 7th of 8 children of Daniel Webster and Jane Elizabeth (Hopkins) Flory. She had brothers Walter, Charles, Berlin & twins Clifton & Leroy who died as babies and sisters Mabel and Geneva.
She was 18 when her mother died. She grew up in Greenwich and was a teacher in Marion, Ohio at the time of her brother Charles's death in 1916. At some time she moved to Cleveland and was a teacher for the Cleveland Public Schools.
Her niece Peg lived with her from about 1928 to 1934. Alice never married but she adopted a daughter Opal, who married and had two sons.
She was living on Fitzwater Rd. in Brecksville, Ohio when she died Dec. 7, 1942 from a cerebral hemorrhage and was 57 years old.
Her death certificate was signed by her nephew Lawrence G. Kale and she was cremated at Highland Park Cemetery in Shaker Hts., Ohio.

MISS ALICE FLORY MOURNED BY PUPILS SHE LOVED. Rev. H. C. Schiering, pastor of Parma United Brethren Church, will conduct services for Miss Alice Flory, science teacher at Audubon Junior High School since it opened 20 years ago, at 2 p.m. today at the G. H. Busch & Son Funeral Home, 4334 Pearl Rd.
Principal Wayne G. Smith of the school ordered the flag lowered to half staff and eulogized Miss Flory over the public address system yesterday, reminding pupils of their teacher's long service, her love of work and the many charitable acts of her life there.
Miss Flory, 57, was born in Greenwich, Oh, and was a graduate of Ohio State University. She taught school at Marion, Oh for several years and later at Erie, Pa. Before going to Audubon, she taught for a year at Harvey Rice School.
In her younger years, Miss Flory had been an active organizer of school clubs & societies, but recently she had been in poor health. She had taken many an indigent student to her home at 61 Fitzwater Road, Brecksville, to enjoy her good food and the spaciousness of her yard and garden.
Miss Flory became ill Saturday and died at her home Monday. An adopted daughter, Mrs. John A. Evans, of Richmond, Ind, is her only survivor.
(Not mentioned in the obit was a niece, Margaret Flory Duesler, daughter of her younger brother Lynn. She was the writer's great-aunt who attended Audubon Jr. H.S. in the 1950's!).
