John H. Ramlo, D.D.S., M.D., 79, of Fargo, died Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Elim Care Center in Fargo, ND.
John Hale Ramlo was born on March 3, 1931 to Oscar and Florence (Page) Ramlo in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He graduated from La Crosse Central High. John received his Doctor of Dental Surgery and Masters of Physiology from the University of Minnesota and Medical Doctor Degree from the University of Wisconsin.
John served in the US Navy as a Medical Officer on the U.S.S. Valley Forge, the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC and the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Following his honorable discharge from active duty he became Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology for Dakota Clinic in Fargo where he remained until his retirement. While there he also practiced at the VA Hospital in Fargo and in a number of the out-lying communities, including Jamestown, ND and Park Rapids, MN. During much of this time he continued to serve our country in the US Naval Reserve and retired as Captain.
John was an active member of various Masonic Bodies in Fargo and Moorhead; he was well known as an excellent ritualist. He served as Worshipful Master of Daylight Lodge, Worthy Patron of the Moorhead Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and was a Chapter Dad and Advisor for the Order of DeMolay in Moorhead. As a young man he received the Chevalier degree and as an adult the Legion of Honor. His Masonic career culminated in the honor of becoming a 33rd Degree Mason and was elected as Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Scottish Rite in North Dakota, Southern Jurisdiction. John enjoyed playing his clarinet and saxophone in El Zagal's Shrine Big Band as well as the Fargo Theater All Stars. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fargo. When his children were growing up, he often arranged for them to play their musical instruments: Eric, trombone; Mark, trumpet; and Todd, clarinet, during worship services.
During his medical practice both in the military and in civilian life, John always put his patient's needs first. He became a commercial pilot and instructor while serving in the Navy. When he wasn't flying to medical meetings, he loved to do ritual work for the Scottish Rite and playing his Clarinet and Tenor Saxophone. After he retired he built a hanger/library/office and study at the family's lake home, where he planned to spend his time reading the many books he had collected.
He married Lois Ann (Lo Ann) Wallschlaeger, also from La Crosse, WI on September 7, 1957.
He is survived by his brother Dwain P. Ramlo of Eugene, OR; his wife, Lo Ann; 3 sons: Eric (Kari Berit) of Red Wing, MN; Mark Ramlo of Hudson, OH; Todd Ramlo of Bloomington, IN and one daughter: Dr. Barbara Ramlo-Halsted (Mark) of Cincinnati, OH. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Chloe, Lydia, Maxeen, Ezra, Benjamin and Sophia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
