Augustino Gus Purpura, age 87, a lifelong Quincy resident, died peacefully, Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the John Adams HealthCare Center in Quincy. He was born, raised, educated in Quincy and was a graduate of Quincy High School. Gus worked as a dietary receiver at the former Quincy City Hospital for twenty years, retiring in 1990. He previously was employed at the former Waldeckers Florist in Braintree for many years. Gus was a member of the Quincy Sons of Italy where he was well known for playing Santa Claus for the Sons of Italy Childrens Christmas Party. Beloved son of the late James and Mary (Ruggiano) Purpura. Devoted brother of Frank Purpura and his late wife Mary of Weymouth, John Purpura and his wife Shirley of Quincy, Mary T. Rossi and her late husband John of Quincy, the late Joseph Purpura and his late wife Anna, the late James Purpura and his late wife Filomena, and the late Salvatore Purpura and his late wife Rose. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Funeral from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, Thursday, December 13th at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the funeral home Wednesday 4 - 8 p.m. Interment Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
