Rev. A. F. Countryman

By the death of Rev. Abram Fletcher Countryman last week, Cameron loses another old time resident, the church a long and efficient worker and the world a good man.

Mr. Countryman died February 23rd, 1915 at his home in Scottsburg, N.Y., where he has resided for the past seventeen years, at the ripe age of 83 years, less sixteen days. He was born at Minden, N.Y., March 11, 1832, the fourth of the eight children of John A. I. and Lany Snyder Countryman. With his parents he removed to South Hill, Cameron, in March 1850, and resided here for a number of years and until he entered the ministry, and has since been a frequent visitor to relatives residing here.

He was converted in the Christian faith when fourteen years of age and felt called upon to enter the ministry. He was licensed to preach by the M.E. church denomination in 1860; received on trial in 1861, and admitted to full membership in the Genesee Conference in 1863. Among the many churches over which he has had charge are: Harmonyville, Italy Hollow, Brookfield, Middlesex, Dresden, Bellona, Benton Center, Parma, Rathbone, North Cohocton, Short Tract, South Byron, East Elba, and Stafford. He was superannuated in 1898 and retired to Scottsburg where he has since resided.

In the early year of his ministry he married Miss Elizabeth Bateman, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Bateman, who were early settlers in this town, but no children were born to them. Mrs. Countryman survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Louisa M. June of Canisteo, and Mrs. Charles Bateman of Scottsburg; two brothers, Addison of Scottsburg, and Rev. J. Benson of Rochester, as well as many more distant relatives, who reside in this and adjoining towns.

[Notation: Scottsburg is a small burg in the township of Sparta, Livingston County, New York. It is not a township unto its self.]
