Nicolás Antonio María Alviso y Duarte was born at the Presidio of Monterey, Alta California, Nueva España, and baptized at the Monterey Presidio Chapel December 7, 1792 (SC Baptism 01818). He was the son of private Francisco Javier Alviso y Trejo and María de los Reyes Duarte y Gertrudis. Nicolás married Bárbara Gertrudis Butrón y Higuera (Dec. 3, 1794, SCL Baptism 02741). He died at San Juan Bautista, Alta California, México, and was buried August 27, 1844 (SJB Burial 03629).
