"On December 26, 1836, I concluded a review of the [recent] deaths at this mission, which occurred while I was not here, but at [Mission] San Rafael [where I had gone] to resolve continuous clashes with the Administrator, Don Antonio Ortega, who did not allow me to leave his location. Since I was so occupied in other matters, I was not able to take care of these records until now. Most died without [receiving the] sacraments because no one was available to provide them, and most died [away from the mission], and they were buried [away from the mission], also. Other [remains] appear to be missing because they were removed [from the mission] to the Indian villages, while some are still here, but those who provided testimony assured me [there were?] more [deaths], but do not remember [them all]. All of this was done in order to avoid confusion."
