Two-year-old James Peter Christiansen left Denmark and came to America along with his widowed mother, Anne, and siblings Nels (9), Anne Mary (7), and Hans C (4). They traveled steerage class aboard the ship "Nevada," and arrived at the Port of New York on 16 Sep 1880. Likely continuing the journey by train, the family settled at Weber County, Utah where his mother married William Royle. In Aug 1883, James' half-brother, William Royle, Jr. was born.

In 1917, James married his brother Niels' widow Johannia Lauritz Christensen.
