Grace Kathleen CUTCHEN Allen Yates was born in Tennessee to Minnie Gilley and Willard Cutchen. She was an only child. By the time she was 8 in 1930 they were living at 514 Henry Street in Gadsden, Etowah County, AL. In 1935 they lived at 522 Bythe Street in Gadsden. They were still in that home in 1940 and Willard was working as a labor foreman in the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The census was taken in April and her mother died at the end of August. At some time in 1934, Grace's best friend, Margaret Maddix lived with the Cutchen family. They took Margaret in after her grandmother died and kept her until Margaret went to live with her father and step-mother some three or four years later.
Grace married George Thomas Allen (Gadsden Ward 2)in Gadsden, became the mother of George Jr, Jackie, Barbara and Gene and in 1957 moved to Texas to save her best friend Margaret. The story goes that Margaret's husband George, knowing the grave condition of his wife, called her best friend in Gadsden for help. It seems that Grace picked up her entire family and moved them into Margarets house on Cooper Drive. According to Margaret, Grace was responsible for returning her to health after the birth of Margaret's second child. Without Grace's intervention Margaret surely would have perished.
She lived in several homes in the Orange area, the most notable was the one on 4th street that contained a huge rabbitry. Her husband G T bred meat rabbits. Many rabbit dinners were cooked and shared from that home.
Eventually she and G T moved to Evadale and lived there until G.T. died in l978. At that time she moved to Beaumont and lived with her daughter Barbara.
Ten years after the death of her husband G.T. she married Robert G Yates on March 20, 1988. Robert died in 2004.

Grace Allen Yates, 90, of Beaumont, passed away Sunday,
October 21, 2012, at Summer Place Nursing and Rehabilitation,Beaumont. She was born on July 24, 1922, to Minnie Gillie Cutchen and Willard Cutchen, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and was raised in Gadsden, Alabama, before moving to Texas in 1957. Granny loved and lived life to the fullest. She loved her family and her extended family, as she was "Granny" to so many people that loved her very much. Granny never met a stranger and could talk to anyone. A very special mother, grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew her over the years.
Grace is survived by her children, George T. Allen and his wife,Shirley, of Evadale; Barbara Kristiansen and her husband, Fred,of Beaumont; and Gene Allen and his wife, Kim, of Orange; grandchildren, Tracy Allen, Natalie Martinets, Robin Humphrey, Kimberly Hall, Kristin Wilson, Dustin Allen, Stormy Hamilton, Lauren Skomer, and Jessica Varner; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, George T. Allen, Sr. and Robert G. Yates; daughter, Jackie Delahoussaye; grandson, Chad Allen; and great-grandson, Blake Allen.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all the caregivers at Summer Place Nursing and ehabilitation and to her special caregivers, Beatrice Bean, Cassandra Randle, and Pearlie Noble."
To Margaret's children she was always, simply, Aunt Grace.
