Sarah Eggleston, 85, helped teach school. Terrace Park substitute known for a sense of humor.

Sarah Eggleston, a 50 year Terrace Park resident and former substitute teacher at Terrace Park Elementary, died Thursday at her home in Naples, Fla., following as long illness. She was 85. She had a zinger of a sense of humor right to the very end, and a deep caring for others," said he son, Lawrence S. Eggleston, of Anderson Township. "Those were her hallmark traits."

Mrs. Eggleston was an elementary school teacher in her native Columbus before moving to Terrace Park in 1947. She retired from teaching to raise her son, returning to the classroom later to substitute.

Born Sarah Sackett in Columbus in 1915, she grew up there and graduated from Ohio State with an education degree in 1937. She was a member of Kappa Kappa sorority.

A friend introduced her to Richard H. Eggleston, whom she married in 1939. Mr. Fox was a former president of Fox Paper Co. in Lockland. They built their house in Terrace Park in 1947. In 1978 they began wintering in Naples and finally gave up their house in Terrace Park three years ago to reside in Naples permanently.

Mrs. Eggleston's daughter-in-law, Marjorie, recalled her as an outstanding grandmother, regularly taking her grandchildren to museums, the theater and educational events.

She was a volunteer with the Junior League both in Columbus and Cincinnati. She was also a member of the Terrace Park Garden Club, the Terrace Park Country Club and the Alter Guild of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park. In Naples, she was a member of Moorings Presbyterian Church and Royal Poinciana Golf Club.

In addition to her son and husband, she is survived by three grandchildren.

A memorial service was at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Webster Chapel of Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples. Burial was at a later date.
