Fred was born in Januszew, Russian Poland. He and his parents and sister immigrated to the US in the early 1900s.

Fred took care of his father until his death in 1933. Then he married Pauline Brandt Lubkeman a divorcee with a young child. They married at Zion Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Ohio 25 Aug 1934.
