Mrs. F. E. Brossard Passed Away Monday
One of Elysian's oldest residents, Mrs. Florentine E. Brossard, 95 years of age, passed away Monday evening at St. Lucas hospital, Faribault, where she had been a patient for two weeks. She suffered a stroke February 23 from which she never recovered and death was attributed to complications and old age.
Until the past several weeks Mrs. Brossard had enjoyed very good health for her advanced age. A friend of young and old, "Grandma" Brossard was a gracious lady, possessing a generous and pleasing personality. The generation she had lived in was one of hard work and struggle, and being of an ambitious nature, her activities continued in that vein in a remarkable manner until recently. Mrs. Brossard had faithfully cared for her husband who has been in poor health for some time. Her devotion to her home and family tended to make hers a fruitful and Christian life worthy of reward.
Minnie Louisa Lafayette was born in Waseca County on November 30, 1862, the daughter of Louisa Brossard Lafayette and Louis K. Lafayette. She was the last remaining member of her family, having been preceded in death by her parents and ten brothers and sisters. When 23 years of age, she married Florentine E. Brossard on Feb. 1, 1886, in the Methodist Church in Waseca, Rev. Carter officiating. They settled in Waseca for two years and moved to Waterville where they spent three years before moving to Elysian where they resided six years. In 1901 they moved to Wisconsin for six years. After spending the next eight years in Waseca and Elysian they went to McGrath, Minn. and made their home there until returning to Elysian September 24, 1939 and had since made their home in this community.
Mrs. Brossard had been a member of the Rebekah lodge for over fifty years. She and her husband quietly observed their 72nd wedding anniversary February 1 this year at their home in the village.
Surviving are her aged husband; three daughters, Mrs. Blanche Agatha Penzkover of Rice Lake, Wis., Mrs. Fred (Gertrude Alice) Nikoley of Elysian, and Mrs. Ernest (Hazel Frances) Nichols of Waterloo, Iowa; also 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mabel Agnes, passed away at the age of two and one-half years, another daughter, Mrs. Grace Erwin, died at the age of 22 years.
Private services for the family were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning at Worlein's funeral home in Waterville. The funeral was held that afternoon at 2 p.m. here in the Methodist Church, the Rev. Hsin Liu, pastor, officiating. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery at Elysian.
Pallbearers were R. T. Schneider, Louis Hruska, E. J. Wright, Karl Hall, Richard and Joe Clarke.
