Leslie L. Manis started life in the rural Hawkins County, TN community of Eidson. He married Amanda Madge (Mandie) Sizemore Manis also of the Pumpkin Valley section of Eidson. While living in TN, they had two sons Don and Jack. Leslie was a farmer and Star Route mail carrier delivering the U.S. Mail between Rogersville and Sneedville, TN.
The hot, humid climate of Northeast TN summers didn't agree with his breathing and so in the late 1930s they took the big step of moving to Red Lake, NM just at the end of the Dust Bowl days at the suggestion of his uncle that had previously moved to that area of NM from TN. A few years later they moved to Dora, NM. They had two more sons, Terry and Eddie after their relocation to NM. Leslie and Mandie had a very large farm and also operated a gas station on the road in front of their house in Dora for many years. Leslie passed away from complications of emphysema at home on Monday night, January 9, 1967. At the time of his death, he was survived by his immediate family, a sister Edna Bowlin of Kingsport, TN and a brother Earl Manis of the west coast.
