Achsah Anna Ross was born Nov. 3, 1866 in Marengo County, Alabama, daughter of Robert and Matilda Ross.

She married John Franklin 'Frank' Shields, one of four brothers known as the Texas Giants. They had fourteen children: Laura Achsah, Ethel Edna, Varina, Virgie Matilda, Starling, Andrew Ross, Frank Jr., Gertrude, Hattie May, Susie Eva, Sanderson, Duren Howard, James Cullen, and Jack. Starling died within the first two months of life. All the others lived well into adulthood.

After Frank's death in 1910, she married James Simpson in 1913.

One of Achsah's grandsons, Marcus Ross Freiberger (son of Varina), represented the United States at the Olympics in Helsinki, Finland in 1952. He was a member of the gold-medal-winning U.S. Basketball Team.
