Walter Brumm was the third child born to Philip and Mary (Rohlfing) Brumm. His father was native to Iowa, but raised in St. Louis. His mother was a St. Louis native. All four of his grandparents were natives to various parts of Germany.

Born in Missouri, likely St. Louis, Walter's parents moved to Upper Alton, Illinois, around 1905. He was living with them there in 1910, but returned to St. Louis, as they did as well after father Philip retired. Walter worked in sales, as a traveling salesman, for a local steel mill.

Between 1930/40, rather late in life, he married Helen Nowak (1898-1977), who had a previous marriage to Carl Nowak, and a daughter, Elaine. He and Helen had no children of their own.
