Philip Brumm was born during the short period his parents, Daniel Brumm Sr. and Luise Regine "Louise" (Raeuchle) Brumm, lived in Burlington, Iowa, along with the family of Daniel's brother, Carl "Charles" Brumm (1816-1870). The Brumms had immigrated to the United States from Sternenfels, Württemberg, in 1853, moving north from their point of entry at New Orleans, Louisiana. Philip was the first child in the family who was born in the U.S. Soon the family relocated in St. Louis, Missouri. He would be one of five children born to Daniel and Louisa.
He married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rohlfing (1860-1940) February 16, 1878, in St. Louis. They were the parents of eight children.

Philip Brumm, 78, former glassblower and for many years a resident of Upper Alton, died Christmas day at 2:40 p.m. at his residence, 5616 Etzel avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. He had been in failing health for the last 10 years.
Born in Burlington, Iowa, Brumm came to Alton in his youth and for a long number of years followed the trade of glassblower. He had resided in St. Louis for the last 20 years, moving there from Alton. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge.
During the time of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Brumm in Alton, they lost two daughters by drowning in the Mississippi. The death of Mr. Brumm today recalled to older residents here the tragic drowning in the Mississippi, near Skinny Island, in which seven girls and a man, including two of Mr. Brumm's daughters, lost their lives by drowning while in wading.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Brumm, and five children, Mrs. Lillian McIntosh, Mrs. Nell Martin, Mrs. Grace Smith, Walter F. and Harry C. Brumm, all of St. Louis. He also leaves three grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Regina Bender, of Jennings, Missouri.
The body will be returned to Alton for funeral services and burial, and may be seen Thursday after 5 p.m. at the Streeper funeral home. The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m., from the funeral home, with the Reverend William B. Lampe of West Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
