Esther Marie Brase Sagehorn was born March 13, 1902, in Deshler, NE to Ernest J. and Lydia K. [Rodenburg] Brase. She died Monday, April 19, 1999 at Prairie Vista Care Center in Holyoke, at the age of 97.
Esther was one of five children. She attended school in Deshler and Ruskin, NE.
Esther Brase was united in marriage to Walter Leonard Sagehorn on January 27, 1921, in Deshler, NE. To this union were born three daughters, Darlene Fern, Lillian Irene and Shirley Ann. Esther and her husband moved to a farm near Amherst in 1921 and to Holyoke in 1930 and Esther lived in Holyoke until her death.
Mrs. Sagehorn was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. An active member of Zion Lutheran Church of Holyoke, she was involved in Lutheran Ladies Aid and Women of Zion and as a Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years. Esther was also a member of the Mirage Delphian and Holyoke Extension clubs and was a 4-H leader. Her many interests included handwork, crafts and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, on July 11, 1988; grandson, Alan Lindgren;; son-in-law Lowell Hagemann; brothers Clarence and Arnold Brase; and sister Florence Leben.
Survivors include daughters Darlene Hagemann of Aurora, Lillian Lindgren and husband, Dewey of Holyoke, and Shirley Travis and husband, Stan, also of Holyoke; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; sister Gladys Willmon of Holyoke; and brother-in-law Herman Leben of Holyoke.
Funeral services for Esther Marie Brase Sagehorn were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 22, at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke. Interment followed in the Holyoke Memorial Park. Pastor Gary Rahe of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate at the services.
