Death of Pioneer.
Mrs. Peter Peters, one of the pioneers of 1848, died Thursday, March 26, shortly after 12 o'clock noon, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Mellen.
The deceased was 73 years of age. Her maiden name Mary Anne Vandeloop and she was born in Zeeland, Holland. In 1848 she came to America with the missionary and founder of Little Chute, the Rev. Theodore J. Vanden Broek and was at one time housekeeper for this pioneer priest. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Peters were residents of Hollandtown, but two years ago they moved to Little Chute.
Mrs. Peters witnessed and experienced all the hardships of the pioneers of '48. She was one of the last of the courageous and devoted band which followed Father Vanden Broek from the Netherlands to America and whose children and children's children now constitute such a large and respected element of the citizenship of Little Chute, Hollandtown, DePere, Green Bay, Freedom, and other places, branches of the tree planted by the missionary when he brought the first shipload of emigrants to labor and privations but also to the freedom and wider opportunities of America.
Besides her aged husband, Mrs. Peters leaves eight children, John, Arnold, William, George, Minnie (Mrs. Joseph Heiting) of Peters, Nebraska; Albert and Joseph, Grand Rapids, Wis.; and the Rev. Francis J. Peters, pastor of St. Nicholas' Church, Freedom, who was called to his mother's bedside on Monday, when her condition became critical.
The funeral will take place Monday, April 1. The requiem mass will be sung at St. John's Church, after which the remains will be take to Hollandtown for burial in the cemetery of St. Francis' Church there.
