Powell-Isabelle "Belle" Powell was born on August 5, 1900, near Durham, Ontario to James and Charlotte (Moore) Morice. She passed away on December 1, 1995, after a lengthy illness, at the Palliser Regional Care Centre where she had been a resident for three years. Belle moved from Ontario in the spring of 1912 with her widowed mother and six siblings to the Lancer-Abbey district where her 21 year old brother Will Morice had taken a homestead. Belle attended the country school of Maple Dale, walking 3 miles to and from every day. In 1917 the Wayne Valley School opened and here she completed her public school, sitting the Grade Eight Provincial exams in Lancer, June 1918, achieving honours. In January 1920 she married the good looking bachelor on the neighboring homestead, Jenkin Powell. She remained in the area most of her life, and the Morice/Powell farms are still operated by her son Howie Powell. Jenkin and Belle braved the "Dirty Thirties," raising seven children. Belle made these years special years through her gift of music. The country school dances always found her at the piano. She also taught all her children to play the piano; they each had 15 minutes of practice before walking a mile to school, and 15 minutes after school. In 1949 the Powells moved to Swift Current to provide High School to the younger children.
She continued to live in Swift Current in the winter months and at the farm in the summer. After Jenkin passed away in 1968, she lived with her brother and sister, Will and Barbara Morice. They spent many winters in Vancouver, and she divided her summers between Cypress Park, the farm, and Swift Current. Belle lived in Heritage Tower for two years, then with her eldest daughter Meryl Campion for several years. In August 1986 she went to live in the Swift Current Nursing Home, and in January 1993 to the Palliser Care Centre.
All her life Belle was an avid reader and her meticulous English and grammar was an example to all her family. She enjoyed writing, and contributed poems and articles to local histories and magazines, as well as poetry and stories for and about her family, especially her grandchildren. Belle Powell was predeceased by her father in 1905, her mother in 1960, her son Graham in 1964, husband Jenkin in 1968, six brothers, Allan, George, Will, Arthur, Leslie, and Melville Morice; two sisters Gertrude Sawyer and Lottie Fetterley. She will be lovingly remembered by five daughters: Meryl Campion, Fran (Peder) Myhr, Janey (Allen) Holbird, Kathleen (Edward) Schwab, and Gaylynne Powell, and one son, Howie (Barbara) Powell; 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren: Dianne (Campion) Meyer, Marianne (Rick) Christopher, Kyle and Tiffany; Philip (D'lores) Unger, Michael Unger; Ron (Cathy) Myhr, Emily and Peder, Glenn (Kate) Myhr, Rob Myhr, Brent (Natja) Myhr and Mikayla; Cheryl Davidson, Alanna and Drew, Scott Holbird, Joey and Trent, Douglas (Susan) Holbird, Samantha and Joel; Morgan (Faye) Powell and Shayne, Bart Powell, Jeff (Yvonne) Powell, Chandler, Lacey, and Jeffrey, Evan (Jackie) Powell and Kelsey; Randy Schwab, Sandra (Tim) Feschuk, Jamie and Jennifer, Karen (Terry) Porochnavy, Tory, Jeffrey, and Taylor; and Patti Schwab; a sister Barbara Morice, sister-in-law Lisa (Melville) Morice, and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral for Belle Powell was held from the Trinity United Church, Lancer, Sask. on Monday, December 4, 1996, service conducted by Rev. Shriley Etter. Casket bearers and ushers were grandchildren: Dan Campion, Rob Myhr, Brent Myhr, Cheryl Davidson, Scott Holbird, Doug Holbird, Jeff Powell, Evan Powell, and Randy Schwab. Due to the intense winter storm many participants and friends were unable to attend. The family is grateful to Brother Louis Andreas of the Oblate Order, Battleford, Sask. for lending his musical talent of voice and guitar at the last minute. Morgan Powell joined Brother Louis in vocal duets. A luncheon was provided by the Lancer United Church ladies. Donations in memory of Belle Powell may be made to the Trinity United Church Memorial Fund, Lancer, or the Lancer Community Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Culham/Bowers Funeral home.
