Harlan Hartwig, 77, of Storm Lake, died on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at Buena Vista Manor, Storm Lake.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 8, at Church of Christ, Storm Lake, with Pastor Paul Steele officiating. Burial was at the Storm Lake Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation was on Oct.7, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family present at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta. Barker Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of arrangements.
Harlan Charles Hartwig was born on April 15, 1930 to Frank and Jessie (Wright) Hartwig in Rockwell City. He graduated from Sac City High School in 1948.
He was united in marriage to Jean Parkinson on June 5, 1949, in Sac City. The couple was blessed with four children, Patrick, Gloria, Wendy, and Allyson.
He was employed for 32 years at Kingans, Storm Lake, and at Hygrade Food Inc., Storm Lake, until the plant closed in 1981. He was a USDA Government Inspector and he was also a custodian at the Storm Lake Junior High until his retirement.
In earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, and he was a Cub Scout leader and a Little League baseball coach in the 1960's and 1970's. Occasionally, he was thrown out of a few games for arguing with the umpires. He was very successful with his coaching as he led a team to the state and received 2nd place.
He remained active with his gardening until he sold his home. One would sometimes see him driving across town on his rider lawn mower to mow his daughter's lawn for something to do. Being a staunch Democrat, he enjoyed a friendly or heated political argument.
His friends would sometimes switch campaign signs in his yard just to see his reaction. He loved going to his grandchildren's sporting and school events; the kids would cheer when he would walk in to watch a game. He always had a fresh dollar bill for his grandchildren when he visited them. In later years, his driving skills left something to be desired -- if you saw him driving down the road, you got out of the way!
His favorite pastime would have to be, hands down, sitting at the local restaurants, smoking cigarettes and having coffee with his buddies, and of course, giving the waitresses a bad time. He was a real people person. He dearly loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was always there for them and they were of deep importance to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; and one brother, Loran Hartwig.
He is survived by his children, Patrick Hartwig of Sioux Rapids; Gloria Wilbur, Wendy Hartwig, and Allyson Munger, all of Storm Lake; five grandchildren, Eryn Hartwig of Alta, Ryan Hartwig, U.S. Army Captain, Robin Anderson of Oskaloosa and Mallory and Jesse Munger of Storm Lake; two brothers, Nolan Hartwig of Ames and Frank Hartwig of Merced, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.
