Fayee LaFrance, Louise's daughter, shared the following with me shortly after Louise died.

LOUISE FLACK 1915-2010 Louise Bertha Shumaker was born in Withrow, WA on April 19, 1915 to Alfred and Emma Jane Shumaker. The family then moved to Terry, Montana where she graduated from high school. Upon graduation she followed her older siblings to Chelan, WA. Her parents settled in Spokane, WA. It was in Chelan that she met and married Allen Flack on January 1, 1936. The story has it that Louise met Allen because he needed a button sewed on his shirt before he could attend a social event, and she volunteered to do it. Both the Shumaker and Flack families knew each other in the Chelan area. Yes, it was and still is a small town where everybody knew each other. Two daughters, Peggy and Faye, (Original spelling of names by parents, but changed to present day spellings by a music teacher in grade school) were born to them in Chelan while living there. Both Allen and Louise worked in the apple orchards until 1941 when they moved to Renton, WA. They bought property on Earlington Hill where they built their first home on 135th Street. In 1955, they built their Panabode log home on 134th Street on "top of the hill, with a view of Mt. Rainier." Louise was a Homemaker for many years while the girls were growing up. After some time she worked at Paulson's Office & Art Supply store and also at the Seattle Sporting Goods Store in the Renton area. Allen worked at the Pacific Car & Foundry for a few years, and then owned and operated Al's Associated Gas Station on Bronson Way in Renton. In the late 50's both Allen and Louise began working in real estate at the White House Realty on Rainier Avenue. Eventually they opened Al Flack Realty in the Renton Highlands. Around 1973, Allen retired at the age of 63 and they spent their retirement years investing in Imperial West and selling Derma 7, a soap business. Louise continued her love for sewing for the grandchildren and her love and talent for making quilts and selling them. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking cookies, cinnamon rolls and pies. She loved to cook, and growing up in the depression, she could take leftovers into a whole new realm! She also enjoyed canning fruit and jams and jellies. She had a "thing" with using bleach for all of her household needs, and you could smell it well before entering the house!! Realizing that they needed to downsize, they sold their log home and moved to an apartment near the Sears Shopping Center in Renton. From there they went to another apartment in the Renton Highlands by Group Health. Upon Allen's death in October of 1987, Louise moved to another apartment in the same area, but not being in the best of health herself, Fayee & Gilbert moved her to Wenatchee to the Cedarwood Apartments, where they were Managers. She joined the First Baptist Church in Wenatchee, acquiring many new friends and joining in on their many activities. From there, she went to the Garden Terrace Retirement Home for awhile and after having breast cancer surgery in 1998, her health began to decline, and was moved to an Assisted Living Facility in East Wenatchee. She did not do well there, either. It was at this time in 2000, that Fayee and Gilbert decided to move to the Olympia area to be near their family. Louise was moved to Eagles Glenn Assisted Living in Tumwater, where she managed to break a hip. From there she went to The Sequoia Assisted Living, the Puget Sound Health Care Inc., The West Woods Assisted Living, and then back to Puget Sound Health Care Inc., where with dementia/Alzheimer's setting in, and Fayee working at the Panorama Retirement Community, it was decided to move her to the Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center at Panorama. I might add, that in the Renton area, it was Allen Schaut that helped move her from apartment to apartment, and in Olympia, it was Stephanie that helped move her from Assisted Living to Assisted Living! She resided for six years at Panorama, and it was here that she passed to her eternal reward on July 2nd, 2010 at 6:00 P.M., with her family at her side. She is preceded in death by her husband, Allen, her parents, Alfred & Emma Jane Shumaker, and her three brothers and five sisters. She leaves two daughters, Peggee Flack of Petaluma CA. Fayee & Gilbert Lafrance of Olympia, WA. Eight grandchildren, Allen Schaut of Maple Valley WA., Paul Schaut of Essex MA., George Schaut II of Mesa AZ., Julie Schaut of Petaluma CA., Stephanie Rickman of Olympia WA., Gilbert Lafrance Jr, of Rochester MA., Tamie Rickman of Port Orchard WA., Claudine Stakelin of Tenino WA. Allen and Louise had seventeen great-grandchildren. Allen lived to see only two great-grandsons born, but Louise was very proud of all and always enjoyed hearing about each one of them while she was in good health. Both of them will be remembered and missed by all of us in the years ahead. Keep them in your memories and in your hearts. They loved all of you very much.
