Bernadine Marie Farrell, 92, died peacefully on Aug. 27 at Legacy Hopewell House in Portland. She was deeply committed to her family and her Catholic faith and was an active member of Holy Redeemer Church in North Portland. Bernadine was the second of Bernard and Lillian Farrell's 13 children. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and Jefferson High School and graduated magna cum laude from Briar Cliff College in Iowa in 1941. She was engaged to be married when her mother suddenly died in 1942, leaving behind a husband and eight children ages 2 to 16. Bernadine broke the engagement and came home to raise the children. When the youngest turned 12 she went to work for Benjamin Franklin Savings and Loan and retired as vice president in 1985. She continued to serve as the matriarch of her extended family until her death. Her family adored her and continues to draw great inspiration from the life she led. Bernadine lived in the Overlook neighborhood until 2007, when she moved to Calaroga Terrace. She was preceded in death by her parents; and 11 siblings, Jessie Spencer, Lillian, Fred, Bud, Bob, Ron, Joe, Father Jim, Mary Ellen Ward, Sharon and Leonard. She is survived by her brother Larry and his wife, Nancy; three other sisters-in-laws; 35 nieces and nephews; 53 grand-nieces and nephews; nine great-grandnieces and nephews; and one great-great-grandniece
