He volunteered and served in the Army Air Corps 379th Bombardment Group from 1943 to 1945 as a B-17 waist gunner, flying several bombing missions over Germany. In 1946, he married Jean Donovan, the love of his life.
He graduated as an electrical engineer from Oregon State University and worked for the Bonneville Power Administration and several engineering firms before founding his own firm, H-V Systems. After Jean died in 2006, Fred moved to the Calaroga Terrace. He dearly loved his family, his Catholic faith, traveling to see his children and grandchildren, and attending his grandchildrens' sporting events.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; and 10 of his 12 siblings, Jessie Spencer, Lillian, Bud, Bob, Ron, Joe, Father Jim, Mary Ellen Ward, Sharon and Leonard.
He is survived by two siblings, Bernadine of Portland and Larry (Nancy) of Vancouver; six children, Joanne (Bob Gaido) of Irvine, Calif., Janet (Len Walker) of San Diego, Patty (Bob Watkins) of Portland, John (Libay) of Montgomery, AL, Bill (Andrew Soh) of San Carlos, Calif. and Tom (Anne) of Santa Clara, Calif.; and his four grandchildren, Joanna Farrell, David Preston, Libby Watkins and Will Watkins.
Fred's funeral will be at Madeleine Church on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 12 p.m., preceded by a Rosary at 11:45 a.m. Interment is at 3 p.m. at Mt Calvary Cemetery.
