Raymond G. Heard, 83, of Roanoke, formerly of Franklin, Ga., died at the Emory University Hospital on Oct. 16, 2010.

Funeral services for Mr. Heard were conducted on Monday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at Tom Stutts and Son Chapel with the Rev. Brett Mathews officiating. Music was provided by Mr. Heard's daughter-in-law, Nancy Heard, and niece, Tammy Bridges. Those serving as pallbearers were Trent Parmer, Dusty Adams, Jason Patterson, Joe Underwood, Daniel Harrison, Jon Underwood and Ray Pasillas. The interment followed in Randolph County Memory Gardens, Roanoke.

Mr. Heard Was born in Heard County, Ga., Sept. 1, 1927, the son of the late Amos Gussie Heard and Addie Lee Moses Heard. He was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church in Roanoke, but was active in Franklin United Methodist Church when his children were young. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. For his gallantry, he received the World War II Victory Medal. "Mr. Raymond" was a well-respected businessman in Heard County. He was the owner and operator of Heard Tire and Amoco Service Station in downtown Franklin. Franklin citizens will remember fondly visits at the service station and Mr. Raymond's dry wit and ready chuckle. He was also a popular rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Raymond was instrumental in saving many homes in Franklin from his great dedication to the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as fire chief. He was a member of the American Legion Post #148 and the Chattahoochee Masonic Lodge # 61. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Bartlett Heard of Roanoke; three children, Diann Adams, Denise and Don Harrison, and Don and Nancy Heard, all of Franklin; one sister Sara Abernathy of Cumming, Ga.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, all of Franklin; and a number of nieces and nephews.
