Obituary for Sarah C. GROVES
Mrs. Sarah C. GROVES died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kittie Ilay in the east part of this city Saturday evening August 25, after a lingering illness aged 78 years, 3 months, and 28 days.
Miss Sarah C. Smith was born April 27, 1836, and lived in Illinois during her childhood, where she was married in 1844 to Mr. William Thomas GROVES. After a residence of about 25 years in Illinois they came to Missouri and settled on a farm in Bates count near the Maple Grove school house where they lived for over thirty years. Eleven children were born to them, seven girls and four boys. Mr. GROVES died about ten years ago. (An unreadable line). Mrs. GROVES has been living in Drexel. She was a consistent Christian and has been a member of the Christian church thirty-four years. She was converted and baptized at Morn Fork, Bates county. The funeral services were held at the Christian church in this city Sunday, August 26, conducted by Elder O. A. Ishmael. Interment at Sharon Cemetery.
Six children survive her, five of the children having proceeded her to the other world. The children remaining are Mrs. Gib SAYLES near Drexel, Mrs. Will Clifton of Amsterdam, Mrs. Joe Rafferty near Drexel, Mrs. Jesse Jacks of Kansas City and Mrs. Sarah Katherine Ilay of this city.
Mrs. GROVES was loved by those who knew her and she leaves a host of friends to mourn her loss.
8-30-1906 Drexel 973.7 Cat. 818

I have her birth date as 1828, though her obit says 1836. In order for her to be 78 years old at the time of her death, she had to be born in 1828. Her obit also states she was married in 1844, but marriage records for Brown County, Illinois, state 1846. In some records her middle initial is C and some J.
