BARBARA WATKINS MAY MCNEELY

BURLINGTON -- Mrs. Barbara Watkins May McNeely, 83, of 1231 May Court, Burlington, died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. following several years of declining health.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Cyrus Carmi McNeely, Jr. and the daughter of Benjamin Victor May and Louise O'Neal Simpson May Foley, both deceased.

Mrs. McNeely was a 1947 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1951 graduate of Duke University. After graduation at Duke University, she taught English at Fairfax Hall Junior College in Waynesboro, VA. She completed post graduate studies at UNC-Greensboro.

Barbara was a member of the Junior Mentor Book Club, The Little Club, The Nine O'Clock Club, Alamance Country Club, Surf Club of Wrightsville Beach, Daughters of the American Revolution, several bridge and duplicate bridge clubs and the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation. She was an Honorary Life Member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was Historian and Past President of Women of the Church, and member of her Church Circle. She was also a volunteer at the Alamance County Historical Museum.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara "Louise" McNeely of Wilmington and Annette McNeely Grant and husband Dave of Burlington; two sons, Cyrus Carmi "Cam" McNeely, III and wife Lisa of Morganton and Benjamin Kilpatrick "Pat" McNeely of Burlington; four grandchildren, Scotty Grant, Katherine Grant, Mary Royal and Patrick McNeely; one great-grandchild, Mary Connelly Royal; two sisters, Louise May Pease of Key Largo, FL and Ann May Harrison of Atlanta, GA; and a brother, Benjamin Victor May, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Arthur McNeely.

The funeral service will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington on Friday, May 25, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. Ronald L. Shive and Rev. Kathryn Lee. There will a family graveside service prior to the church service at Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and also following the service at the church in the John Knox Room. Other times they will be at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215; to the Patricia G. Bynum Fund, 1240 Huffman Mill Road, Burlington, NC 27215; or to the First Presbyterian Church, 508 West Davis Street, Burlington, NC 27215.

The family would like to extend special gratitude towards the following people for their loving care: Janak Choksi, MD, Chapman McQueen, MD, Carolyn Lewis, Tammy Kirby, Carolyn Farrington, Sheila Worth, Yasha Worth, Mary Tyree, Pauline Curry and the entire staff of Hospice.
