CYRUS CARMI ''BUCK' McNEELY JR. BURLINGTON - Mr. Cyrus Carmi ''Buck' McNeely Jr., 77, of 1231 May Court, died unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, conducted by the Rev. Genie Martin, associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Burlington and the Rev. Ron Tippens of Charlotte. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.A native of Mooresville, he was the son of the late Cyrus Carmi McNeely Sr. and the late Alice Belle Cloaninger McNeely. He was the retired executive vice president of the house fabrics division of Burlington Industries. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, where he formerly served as deacon and was an elder of the church. He formerly served on numerous committees in the church.

A graduate of Davidson College, Mr. McNeely was drafted into the U.S. Army in August 1943. He participated in battles at The Bridge at Remagen and the Battle of the Bulge. He had attained the rank of commandant, when he led other Americans in the occupation of Berlin. He was awarded the Bronze Star for outstanding leadership and for serving as an inspiration to the men he commanded. He was only 22 years old when he was discharged with the rank of captain and decorated war hero. Medals received include the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal. He made the ''Return to Victory' battlefield tour with the 78th Infantry Division in May 1985 and Jackson Reunion in July 1986.

He was a charter board member of First South Bank, a member of the Alamance Regional Medical Center's board of directors, past board member of May Memorial Library, past board member of Twin Lakes Center and past board member of the American Cancer Society.

Mr. McNeely served as a member of the board of directors of the Alamance Community College Foundation from 1983 to 1999. Upon his retirement from the board, he was honored with Alamance Community College's highest honor, Board Emeritus, for service above and beyond the call of duty.

He was a member of the Alamance Country Club. He was past president of the Burlington Lions Club and past president of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Barbara May McNeely of the home; daughters, Ms. Barbara Louise McNeely of Wilmington and Mrs. Annette McNeely Grant of Burlington; sons, Mr. Cyrus Carmi ''Cam' McNeely III of Morganton and Mr. Benjamin Kilpatrick ''Pat' McNeely of Burlington; sister, Mrs. Elaine McNeely Leight of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren, Mary Eileen McNeely, Kilpatrick Moran McNeely and Scott Alexander Grant.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Arthur McNeely; and sisters, Mary Frances McNeely and Alice McNeely Herring.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary, Burlington.
