Captain Au was born in Cumberland county, Pa., Dec. 12, 1824, and lived on a farm there until 1843 when he located in Mansfield and engaged in carpentry and building. He later went to Chillicothe and in 1846 moved to Iowa, from there going down the river to Memphis, Tenn., and points in Mississippi. I of the One Hundred and Twentieth Ohio Volunteer infantry and was made captain of the company, in which capacity he served until December, 1864, when by reason of a consolidation he was mustered out and returned to his home. In 1869 he engaged in the mercantile business in Ontario in which he continued until 1905 when he moved back to Mansfield, having been compelled to retire from active business on account of the infirmities of age. He is survived by his wife and four children, John H., of Ontario, Sherman G., Abram H. and Mrs. P. M. Ringer, of Mansfield, also by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
