Alfred Rowland Matthews, 80, passed away December 12, 2011. Born June 13, 1931 in Decatur, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mildred Compton Matthews.
Alfred graduated from Auburn University with a degree in chemistry. He worked with Chemstrand in Pensacola, Fla., until joining his brothers in operating the family business, Matthews Machine Co. in Decatur. He relocated to Raleigh, N.C., several years ago.
He is survived by his three children, Michelle Matthews of Decatur, David C. Matthews and wife, Marcia, of Toney, and Nancy Higdon and husband, Terry, of Decatur; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and three brothers, James and Roni Matthews, Ernest and Annie Ruth Matthews and Ralph and Anne Matthews, all of Decatur.
Family will receive friends today, December 17, 2011, from noon to 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home with funeral services to begin at 1 p.m. Burial to follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
