Death, shortly before midnight Tuesday [August 12, 1947], in St. Joseph's Hospital, Sioux City, claimed Anton Delperdang, one of the oldest former residents of Remsen and who had made his home in this community three-quarters of a century. He was 87 years old. Surviving are two daughters, two sons, and one sister. Funeral services will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Church here Saturday [August 16] morning.
Mr. Delperdang, who moved to Sioux City a year ago to share a home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. U. H. Bunkers, had been in feeble health for five years, his condition having been due principally to infirmities. Before moving to Sioux City he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Bunkers in Remsen, and the change was made because of the fact that Mr. Bunkers' business interests were in the city. On Sunday, August 3, Mr. Delperdang suffered a paralytic attack due to a cerebral hemorrhage and was taken to the hospital immediately. The end was foreseen, although he rallied during the first three days. He passed away at 11:50 Tuesday night with the immediate family at his bedside.
Born March 4, 1860, on a farm near Springbrook, Jackson County, Iowa, he was the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Delperdang. The family came to the Remsen community in 1872, when Anton was 12 years of age. They settled on a farm which they purchased six miles north of Remsen, now operated by Nick Weiler.
January 29, 1884, Mr. Delperdang married Catherine Sudtelgte at Festina, Iowa, and the couple settled on a farm near the old home, north of Remsen and now occupied by their son, Vincent. Mr. and Mrs. Delperdang resided there, built up a splendid home and farmstead, and retired to town in 1919 to enjoy the fruits of their labor in peace and comfort among their many good friends and to remain in the close vicinity of their children.
Anton Delperdang was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and during his 75 years here was counted among the faithful and devoted members of St. Mary's congregation. He was a man of exemplary habits, excellent personality, and deeply devoted to his family, loyal and friendly among his many acquaintances, and a splendid example of citizenship. His many friends were solicitous over his welfare during his declining years in Remsen and in Sioux City and join in sincere condolences to the stricken family.
Mrs. Delperdang passed away in 1917. The couple were the parents of seven children, four of whom survive, namely George, Vincent, and Mrs. John T. (Blanche) Thill, all of Remsen; and Mrs. Bunkers (Martha) of Sioux City. Of the family of six brothers and sisters, but one survives – Mrs. Nicholas Ernster of Remsen. The body is at the Fisch Funeral Home.
